Nick Tipping - Bass

Nick Tipping

Nick Tipping is a bass player based in Wellington, New Zealand. Although he is mainly a jazz player he will play anything for money; this has led to gigs with the NZSO, Chris de Burgh and 4 seasons in the Dancing with the Stars band.

Nick studied bass at the Massey University Conservatorium of Music before an unlikely sequence of events saw him spending two years in Las Vegas, Nevada, learning bass from Tom Warrington at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While there he contributed to the local economy and general moral decline by playing shows in all of the major casinos on the Strip, including the Riviera, the Tropicana and the Bellagio. He also got to rub shoulders with his most famous audience member, 42nd US President William J. Clinton.

After a few months in Korea teaching at the Seoul Jazz Academy, Nick fulfilled his duty as a Kiwi and moved back to New Zealand, where he found employment back at Massey University (now the NZ School of Music). Nick currently works around the country as a bass player and teacher, and is Head of Jazz at the NZSM. Other recent work includes recordings and performances with Nathan Haines, John Psathas, and Norman Meehan, as well as his own jazz trio with Charmaine Ford and Richard Wise.

Nick has the fewest children out of any member of The Waitings.
